Despite the fact that I always print in black and white, the colored ink cartridges still manage to run out of ink. When they do, the printer won’t function (won’t even print in grayscale) until I replace the empty colored ink cartridge. Is this normal, or is my printer a ridiculous piece of crap?

I want to print my car registration out on my epson cx5800. but the printer is out of colored ink and there are some colored icons on the screen. It wont print because it says I need new color ink cartridges. I popped the cartridges out and reinserted, but still won’t print. I don’t have any replacement color cartridges right now. thanks guys
